Postgården in Copenhagen is nominated for Danish RENOVER prisen 2019

The transformation of the former royal post office at Købmagergade in central Copenhagen is one of the six selected projects, that have been nominated for this year's RENOVER prisen 2019.

RENOVER prisen is awarded every year to celebrate Denmark’s best renovation project with an ambition to recognize and highlight good and inspiring renovation projects from all over Denmark. Postgården is an example of how, through careful renovation – and by employing simple yet bold measures – it is possible to transform a closed historic property in the middle of Copenhagen into a vibrant and welcoming building with offices, showrooms and shops, which today employs 800 people.

“We are incredibly proud, that our transformation of Postgården is one of the nominated projects for this year’s RENOVER prisen, and that our long-running work with the iconic building is being recognized. When Postgården originally functioned as a post office and distribution centre, the building employed 700 people, who handled and delivered post to the Copenhageners. Since then, the building has been almost empty, and when the developer took over the building, there were only 40 employees. With the transformation the building complex today forms the daily setting for a number of companies. With the new functions 800 workplaces have been restored in Postgården. Today Postgården is once again a building that gives something back to the city,” says Mikkel Westfall, Creative Director at Årstiderne Arkitekter.

The 16.000 m2 building complex consists of 10 buildings from different time periods, and today the buildings comprise offices for several Danish companies – in example Momondo, Unity, Fritz Hansen and Fredericia Furniture. The entire transformation has been carried out with respect for the different building’s original architecture, while still optimizing the spaces with focus on daylight and acoustics. Moreover, one of the main thrusts of the project has been to open the building towards the street with large windows on the ground floor, and thus to invite the public inside to create a constant flow of people, who today visit the shops, showrooms and offices.

The project is completed in collaboration with PFA Ejendomme, EKJ Rådgivende Ingeniører and Client Consultant Jan Stokholm.  RENOVER prisen was founded by Danish Realdania and Grundejernes Investeringsfond, and is awarded in September 2019.
