Årstiderne Arkitekter wins the competition for Herning’s new talent school and sports centre

A team comprising Årstiderne Arkitekter, KPC and ÅF has been selected by Herning Municipality to design and build a new talent school and performance hall in Herning adjacent to the town’s existing sports centre, which will also be enlarged as part of the project. The talent school and sports centre will benefit thousands of local sports enthusiasts by creating a attractive venue for athletes at all levels. At the same time, the project supports Herning Municipality’s vision to intensify its focus on the development of specially talented athletes.

“The new talent school and performance hall will become a focal point for exercise, elite sports and talent development, and the new building complex will help rebrand Herning Sports Centre locally and nationally as a diverse, visionary athletic venue where hobby and elite athletes meet in a true sports Mecca with state-of-the-art facilities for practitioners and spectators alike,” says Peter Kristiansen, Creative Manager, Learning & Leisure, Årstiderne Arkitekter.

The project is being built next to the existing Herning Sports Centre, which is also being enlarged to include a new arrival building and apron. A key part of the project will also be to merge the new sports centre complex and talent school with the surrounding town.

One arrives at the new main entrance via a large new apron, which becomes the centre’s new focal point. On the apron, students and recreational users will benefit from its diversity of elements for activity, playing fields and relaxing, each calling for movement, play, immersion and learning.  The vision of turning the centre’s ‘face’ to the south is supported by the architecture, where the design of both the apron and main entrance have a naturally alluring effect upon arriving at the sports centre.

The entire new building complex will be completed in 2021, and students from the current talent classes at Sønderagerskolen will be the first who can look forward to moving into the new talent school.
