Brændgårdsparken

Social and architectural boost of Brændgårdsparken

The renovation of the common housing project has been completed based on thorough user involvement. The focus has been on design, functional quality, durability, environmental considerations as well as social and economic parameters.

In its brief, the Fruehøjgaard housing association asked for a renovation with diversity and architectural quality, with an emphasis on good design, functional quality, durability, environmental considerations as well as social and financial considerations.

To elevate the architectural quality of the development, Årstiderne Arkitekter has chosen to change its character from a homogeneous, uniform look to a diverse, varied look. To improve the development, both socially and architecturally, all buildings have been given a new façade and all roofs have been replaced.

In 2004, 22 social housing developments in Denmark were selected by Landsbyggefonden – Danish Social Housing Sector – to participate as demo projects for the development and testing of tools for future-proofing social housing developments. Brændgårdsparken in Herning is one of the projects selected and Årstiderne Arkitekter has therefore developed tools for both resident involvement and energy renovation.

Årstiderne Arkitekter was the main consultant on the project, which spanned from facilitation of the democratic process involving residents, whereby more than 150 residents attended three workshops and thus had an active role in shaping their future homes, to the handover of the fully refurbished flats.
